    Depression

    The term Depression is associated with feeling of sadness, hopelessness, irritability, and unmotivated.  Experiencing these symptoms from time to time can be a normal part of life.  When one experiences these with a loss of interest in daily life for more than 2 weeks it is likely Clinical Depression

    Depression Counseling & Treatments:

    Depression can be improved with treatment. Psychotherapy or a combination of psychotherapy and medication is most common, depending on one’s history and persistence of symptoms. The earlier treatment can begin, the more effective the results. Depression Counseling is available at the Counseling and Wellness Center of South Florida.

    Depression Symptoms:

    • Thoughts of suicide or death
    • Major fatigue
    • Loss of energy
    • Chronic pain
    • Digestive disorders
    • Loss of pleasure and interest in once enjoyed activities
    • Restlessness
    • Irritability
    • Sleep issues
    • Severe sadness
    • Feeling numb
    • Changes in appetite
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Difficulty making decisions
    • Feeling guilty
    • Feeling hopeless
    • Feeling worthless

    Depression Factors:

    There are several factors why someone may become clinically depressed. For some, there could be many reasons contributing to depression and while others it may be a single reason. Oftentimes, people can become depressed for no apparent reason.

    • Situational – Challenging and highly stressful life events such as death of a loved one, financial problems or divorce.
    • Medication – Some medications can have depressive side effects.
    • Gender – Women tend to experience depression more often than men due to hormonal changes women experience during menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth and menopause.
    • Biological – Having too much or too little neurotransmitters-brain chemicals that when changed, may cause depression.
    • Cognitive – People with low self-esteem and negativity are more likely to develop clinical depression.
    • Co-occurrence – Certain illness can coincide with depression such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
    • Genetic – Having a family history of the illness increases the risk for developing depression.
